As we age, our skin loses collagen and elasticity, leading to drooping skin and lines and wrinkles. This can especially affect the skin around the eyes, leading to a tired or sad appearance. Blepharoplasty surgery can help to correct these signs of aging for a more youthful look for years to come!

What is Blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty, also known as eyelid surgery, is a procedure done to improve the appearance of the lower and/or upper eyelids. This procedure can rejuvenate the areas surrounding your eyes to help improve appearance or correct functional problems.

Who is a Good Candidate for Blepharoplasty?

Healthy individuals who are experiencing the following issues may be able to benefit from blepharoplasty surgery:

  • Loose skin that creates folds on the upper eyelid, sometimes impeding vision.
  • Drooping lower eyelids.
  • Fatty deposits that cause puffiness in the eyelids.
  • Excess skin or fine wrinkles in the lower lid.

If you are experiencing any of these issues, a consultation with Dr. Newman can help to determine if this procedure is right for you. Surprisingly, many patients don’t need a blepharoplasty, but instead need a brow lift, a procedure that raises the brows higher than they currently located.

The Blepharoplasty Procedure

Eyelid surgery can be performed on the upper lids, the lower lids, or both to rejuvenate your appearance. During upper eyelid surgery, an incision will be created at the natural eyelid crease through which excess fat, muscle, and skin will be removed. During the lower eyelid procedure, an incision will be made just below the eyelashes to trim excess fat and skin, as well as tighten the lower eyelid muscle. Fine sutures will be used to close the incisions to help minimize scar visibility.

Downtime and Recovery

After blepharoplasty surgery, patients may experience light sensitivity and tearing temporarily. Swelling and bruising are also likely, which may last for a week or more. Ice packs and cold compresses can help to reduce swelling, while pain medication can help with any discomfort that may occur. Patients are encouraged to sleep with their head elevated. Straining, heavy lifting, and other strenuous activities should be avoided for 10-14 days. Bending over and lifting heavy objects may be restricted for 3-4 weeks. Remember to follow Dr. Newman’s specific post-op instructions to help ensure a quick and easy recovery process.

Results from eyelid surgery are long-lasting. However, as aging continues, your eyelid appearance may change. However, you will longer than you would have had you not had the procedure.
