READY FOR A CONSULTATION?
Most people associate breast reduction surgery with women. However, men can benefit from a type of breast reduction surgery for a condition called Gynecomastia, or, excess male breast tissue. While many factors can contribute to the cause of gynecomastia, only surgery can eliminate it.
Gynecomastia surgery is an excellent way to reduce male breasts that don’t respond to other treatment options, so here’s what to know about this option and its recovery period.
What is Gynecomastia Surgery?
Gynecomastia is a medical term that refers to excess breast tissue in men. Gynecomastia commonly affects men during puberty and late adulthood. It’s caused by many factors like excess hormones or the use of certain drugs and medications.
Gynecomastia Surgery Recovery
Gynecomastia surgery is typically performed under general anesthesia and takes about 2 ½ hours. Everyone’s recovery is different and varies on factors like your overall health and tolerance to pain. However, Dr. Newman will provide instructions to follow during your recovery to make sure it’s successful.
Most patients seeking gynecomastia surgery desire discretion and don’t want people knowing they had surgery. Dr. Newman’s technique creates scars that are hidden so well, they are barely noticeable. Nobody has to ever know you had gynecomastia surgery!
Wearing compression is one of the most important things you can do post-surgery. A compression garment will be placed within one week of your surgery, if not the day of your surgery. This helps mitigate swelling and keeps the skin adhered to the new contours. You’ll have prescription medications you can take to manage any pain during the first few days.
You should avoid heavy lifting and strenuous activities for at least five days after your operation. You typically will be able to go back to work or your typical routine within two to five days. If you work a physical job, Dr. Newman can give you the best idea of when to go back to work.
It can take several weeks for the swelling to resolve. While immediate results are typically appreciated, final results will take a few months to occur depending on compliance with post-operative instructions.
