READY FOR A CONSULTATION?

If you’re tired of seeing the same old stubborn pockets of excess fat linger despite your best efforts with eating healthy and exercising regularly, you may have looked into a surgical procedure like liposuction that promises to finally give you the body contour you’re after. However, making this decision isn’t a simple process, as this isn’t something that should be considered flippantly. For those interested but not committed to the idea of liposuction, here are a few things to ask yourself before scheduling a consultation with board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Christopher Newman.

Are There Alternatives to Liposuction?

You’ve probably come across less-invasive options to reduce body fat in specific areas, and while these can be effective for some, it’s not a guarantee that you’ll get the results you need the first time around. Needing multiple treatments can get costly over time. And although you can see good results from non-surgical fat reduction treatments, there are no options currently available that can remove as much fat in the most precise way than liposuction.

Am I A Good Candidate?

Not everyone is eligible for cosmetic surgery procedures like liposuction. Dr. Newman gives all his patients a consultation and examination prior to undergoing even minimally invasive procedures. If the following criteria apply to you, however, you’re likely a good candidate:

  • You are within 25% of your ideal body weight
  • You’re not a smoker
  • You have realistic, self-confident goals for the outcome of liposuction
  • Your skin is elastic and firm
  • You haven’t had luck with previous body fat reduction strategies.

Dr. Newman will ask you about your health history, such as prior surgeries or underlying conditions, during the consultation that can affect whether you can have liposuction.

Do You Understand the Procedure?

Dr. Newman encourages all his patients to be informed and aware of how procedures are performed so they can meaningfully talk with him about the specific steps and desired outcome. In liposuction, Dr. Newman makes tiny incisions through which a hollow cannula can be inserted to physically dislodge and remove fat cells. This can be done under local anesthetic for shorter recovery times, but for larger areas or multiple treatment locations, he may recommend general anesthesia.

Recovery from liposuction is relatively quick, depending on the type of anesthesia used. Most people take a few days off of work to recover, and you will be required to wear a compression garment to help keep the treated area supported and reduce swelling.

When Do You Want To See Results?

Because liposuction causes some bruising and swelling, your results aren’t final right away. Liposuction patients don’t see their full results until all the residual swelling goes down, which can take up to a year. However, significant results are apparent within a few weeks, and there’s very minimal scarring due to the minimally invasive nature of this technique.
