Who is a Candidate for Male Breast Reduction?
Gynecomastia is common among men and can be a sensitive topic. Typically, men gain breast tissue during the teenage years that resolves by early adulthood. Unfortunately, the breast tissue does not always disappear like it is supposed to. Men also commonly develop breast tissue later in life as testosterone levels diminish and men become estrogen dominant. Occasionally, hormones, medications, and behavioral factors can lead to gynecomastia and should be addressed accordingly. Gynecomastia can be mild like areola protrusion to severe where breast tissue hangs down (breast ptosis). Even those with mild cases of gynecomastia can still benefit from a male breast reduction procedure.
The Male Breast Reduction Procedure
Gynecomastia surgery is an outpatient procedure typically completed in 2 to 3 hours. Depending on the technique used, either general or local anesthesia will be used to ensure a comfortable procedure process. If stubborn fat is the cause of enlarged tissue, liposuction techniques can be used alone. Liposuction involves tiny, well-concealed incision where a cannula can be inserted to break up and remove stubborn fat cells. If enlarged breast tissue is present, surgical excision can be used. This requires an incision around the areola and sometimes within the natural crease of the chest where excess tissue and skin can be removed. In some cases, a combination of surgical excision and liposuction techniques will be used.
