Whether it’s from volume loss with age, poor contours from injury, or just a natural feature you’d like enhanced, fat grafting can offer a solution. Using your own fat cells, fat grafts can restore volume to the body and improve your overall shape.

What is Fat Grafting?

Fat grafting involves the use of the patient’s own fat cells to enhance another area of the body. Fat cells are obtained through liposuction techniques, allowing some slimming benefits to another area of the body at the same time. The obtained fat cells can then be placed in areas of the body such as the face, hips, buttocks, or breasts for a natural-looking, subtle enhancement.

Who is a Candidate for Fat Grafting?

Candidates for body fat grafting must have an adequate amount of fat on areas of the body such as the abdomen or thighs that can be used during the transfer. Fat grafting works best for those who wish to achieve a natural-looking enhancement as opposed to a drastic transformation. Fat transfer techniques can also be combined with other surgical procedure to optimize results. Those that are already undergoing liposuction for its slimming benefits can choose to utilize their fat cells for a fat transfer. The most common areas for a body fat transfer are the face, buttockss and breasts. This can improve the size, shape, and symmetry of the treatment area.

The Fat Grafting Procedure

The fat grafting procedure will typically be performed under general anesthesia to obtain the fat cells. During the liposuction portion of the procedure, tiny incisions will be created where excess fat is present. A cannula will then be used to break up and remove the fat cells. once enough fat cells are collected, they will be spun in a centrifuge, purifying the cells prior to placement. Once the fat cells are ready, they will be placed in the target area through small incisions. Several injections will be made to ensure even distribution of the fat cells. Dr. Newman may place more fat cells than needed, keeping in mind that not all fat cells will survive the process.

Downtime and Recovery

After treatment with a fat transfer, patients can expect some time off work to rest and recover. Swelling and discomfort can be expected in the first several days and can be managed with an ice pack and pain medication prescribed by Dr. Newman. It is very important not to put any pressure on the placement site for several weeks after placement. If the breasts were treated, avoid sleeping on the stomach. If the buttocks were treated, avoid sitting and laying on your back. Dr. Newman will give you specific care instruction and restrictions to follow to ensure successful results.
