Aging and environmental damage can take a toll on our skin over the years. This can lead to pigment issues, red spots, sun damage, and more. IPL photofacial treatments are a great, no-downtime treatment option to help eliminate uneven skin pigmentation for a more even, smoother complexion.

What is IPL?

IPL (intense pulsed light) treatments are done to help address an array of skin irregularities and issues. It can be used to treat skin on the face, neck, chest, shoulder, arms, back, legs, and more!

Who is a Good Candidate for IPL?

Individuals who are dealing with the following skin issues may be able to benefit from IPL treatments:

  • Freckles
  • Sun damage
  • Brown and red spots
  • Redness
  • Rosacea
  • Pigment imperfections

Because the IPL light rays are attracted to pigment, those with darker skin tones may not be good candidates, as the treatment may result in discoloration. A consultation with Dr. Newman can help to determine if this treatment is a good match for you.

The IPL Procedure

The IPL treatment emits multiple wavelengths of intense pulsed light to target the pigment-producing cells in the skin. This light energy is converted to heat which destroys the cells and stimulates collagen and elastin production in the skin.

During your appointment, your laser specialist will gently cleanse your skin. Then, a cool gel will be applied, and the IPL device will be moved over the skin in a grid-like pattern. This process may be repeated multiple times.

Most individuals require a series of 3-5 treatments spaced four weeks apart to see optimal results.

Downtime and Recovery

Following your IPL treatment, there is no downtime required. Mild redness and swelling may occur, which should dissipate shortly after. You can feel free to apply makeup right after treatment, as well as return to your normal skincare routine. It is advised that patients avoid the sun for the next week and wear sunscreen when outdoors.
