Rhinoplasty changes the proportion and shape of the nose for greater facial balance. Although cosmetic in nature, it can also be done for medical reasons, such as correcting breathing issues or disfigurement caused by trauma or a birth defect.

Our nose contains bone in the upper portion and cartilage in the lower. A rhinoplasty can alter bone, cartilage, skin, or all three.

Why Do People Choose Rhinoplasty?

Surgical rhinoplasty is useful in reshaping the following aspects of the nose:

• Nose size in relation to the rest of the face
• Nose width at the bridge or the base
• Humps or depressions on the bridge
• The dimensions of the nasal tip (enlarged/bulbous/drooping/upturned/hooked)
• Nostrils that are large, upturned, or wide
• Nasal asymmetry

If you opt for a rhinoplasty to gain symmetry for your nose, keep in mind that everyone’s nose is asymmetrical to a certain degree. The rhinoplasty may not be able to achieve perfect symmetry for you.

A rhinoplasty may be partially covered by your health insurance if it is being used to resolve functional medical issues.

Your Consultation

It is important to meet with Dr. Newman and discuss whether rhinoplasty is an appropriate option for you. Part of this will be going over your complete medical history, including allergies and any medications you are currently taking.

If you are ascertained to be a good candidate for the procedure, Dr. Newman will come up with a customized surgical plan for you. He will consider several factors when planning your rhinoplasty. These include the proportions of your other facial features, the thickness of the skin on your nose, and what you would like to be changed.

The Rhinoplasty Procedure

A rhinoplasty is usually an outpatient procedure and does not require an overnight stay at the facility. General anesthesia or local anesthesia with IV sedation is administered, so you will either sleep through the procedure or remain sedated throughout it. Either option will make it so you do not feel any pain.

Once the anesthesia takes full effect, Dr. Newman will make incisions either within the nostrils or across the base of the nose. He will then get to work reshaping the bone, cartilage, and/or soft tissue to achieve the desired profile for your nose. To complete the procedure, the incisions will be closed using sutures.

The Recovery Process

It is recommended that you wear a nasal splint for the first week after the rhinoplasty. Minimal to moderate swelling and bruising around the area is common during the first few weeks.

During healing, use sunscreen on your nose to prevent permanent discoloration on the skin of your nose. Avoid wearing glasses or sunglasses immediately after your surgery so as to not put any pressure on your healing nose. If possible, avoid extreme facial expressions.

You can resume your social activities within a handful of weeks after the surgery. It is advisable to avoid strenuous activities like sports and heavy exercise for around four weeks.

Your nose may be a little swollen in the months after your surgery. The final shape of your nose will show once your nose has healed completely.
